As the cost of living continues to rise, competitive compensation remains a priority for employers and job seekers alike. At the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, investing in employees is more than a budget decision. It is a commitment to the people who serve our community every day.
New fiscal year brings pay increases for all LCSD employees
As part of the 2026-27 budget, which took effect July 1, 2026, all Lexington County Sheriff’s Department employees will receive a 3% cost-of-living adjustment. Employees are also eligible for up to a 2% merit-based raise based on their most recent performance evaluation.
These increases reflect Lexington County’s continued commitment to attracting, retaining and rewarding dedicated public servants while ensuring the Sheriff’s Department remains competitive in today’s workforce.
Competitive starting salaries for new deputies
For those considering a career in law enforcement or detention operations, there has never been a better time to join the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Uncertified detention and law enforcement deputy applicants can begin with a starting salary up to $55,408.08. This applies to brand-new, uncertified detention or law enforcement applicants and reflects LCSD’s standard 86-hour bi-weekly shift schedule.
Certified detention and law enforcement deputy applicants are eligible for higher starting salary ranges based on experience:
Starting salary for certified applicants: $53,350.96 to $56,436.64
This applies to South Carolina-certified officers with less than three years of service.
Three years of service salary: $54,893.80 to $56,950.92
This applies to South Carolina-certified officers with three years of service.
Six years of service salary: $56,436.64 to $58,493.76
This applies to South Carolina-certified officers with six years of service.
Applicants might also be eligible for additional incentives depending on education and Spanish fluency.
More than compensation
Competitive pay is only one part of the investment LCSD makes in its employees. The department also provides opportunities for professional development, specialized assignments, leadership training and advancement throughout an employee’s career.
From patrol and detention operations to investigations, judicial services, communications, technology and administrative support roles, employees have opportunities to build meaningful careers while serving one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing communities.
Whether you are beginning your public safety career or looking for a new opportunity to serve, LCSD offers a place where hard work, professionalism and dedication are recognized and rewarded.
Comprehensive benefits employees can count on
Lexington County offers a complete benefits package to full-time employees, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, retirement, holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, flexible spending accounts, wellness incentive health reimbursement accounts, deferred compensation and more.
Another significant advantage for LCSD employees is stability in health care costs. County employees have not experienced an increase in health insurance premiums in more than a decade, helping families better manage household expenses while maintaining quality coverage.
Eligible employees are also paid overtime at a rate of 1.5 times their regular rate of pay for time worked. Overtime is calculated for any hours worked over 86 in a two-week pay period for non-exempt, sworn personnel.
Annual leave is accrued at 10 days per year for employees with less than five years of service with the county, 15 days for employees with five to 10 years of service and 20 days for employees with 10 or more years of service. Sick leave is accrued at 12 days per year.
Investing in people and public safety
This budget is not just about numbers. It is about people, our most important asset.
And, here’s another important number: $5,000.
New detention and patrol employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on incentive to be paid out over their first two years of service.
This is just another example of how LCSD remains committed to providing employees with the resources, support and compensation they deserve while continuing to deliver exceptional service to the people of Lexington County.
Competitive salaries help the department recruit high-quality candidates, retain experienced employees and ensure the community continues to benefit from a professional and highly trained workforce.
Looking ahead
The Sheriff’s Department continues to invest in the people who make its mission possible. Through competitive pay, professional development opportunities, strong benefits and a commitment to employee success, LCSD remains focused on building a workforce prepared to meet the needs of a growing community.
