Job Purpose

The CSI Firearms Examiner is responsible for processing crime scenes, collecting, preserving, and documenting evidence crucial for criminal prosecution. This role involves analyzing various forms of evidence, particularly firearms and ammunition, generating detailed reports, and providing expert testimony in court.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough investigations of major crimes, including supervising crime scenes, reviewing and collecting evidence, and serving search warrants.
  • Participate in and supervise special operations such as undercover missions and surveillance.
  • Maintain precise and comprehensive documentation of case developments and evidence analysis.
  • Prepare cases for court, ensuring readiness for prosecution and providing expert testimony as required.
  • Supervise and mentor junior investigators, ensuring adherence to standards and regulations.
  • Engage in general law enforcement duties, maintain public safety, and contribute to community relations efforts.
  • Attend training sessions to maintain proficiency in forensic techniques and the use of firearms.
  • Manage and respond to community inquiries and complaints regarding law enforcement activities.
  • Perform other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Advanced understanding of forensic science techniques, laboratory protocols, and scientific methodologies, especially related to firearms and ammunition analysis.
  • Proficiency in evidence collection, preservation, and electronic search methods to ensure integrity and admissibility in court.
  • Familiarity with various operating systems and law enforcement equipment.

Skills:

  • Expertise in the operation of forensic tools, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under stress, conduct surveillance, and communicate effectively in written and verbal forms.

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor or advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  • Completion of a crime scene training program or a firearms examiner training program with documented competency.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Class 1 Law Enforcement Certification (or equivalent for out-of-state applicants).
  • AccessData Certified Examiner (ACE) or similar credentials.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to attend specialized training, such as the National Firearms Examiner Academy, and cross-train in various forensic disciplines.
  • Ability to perform detailed analyses of firearms, ammunition, and related evidence, including microscopic comparisons and test firings.
  • Competency in processing crime scenes using a variety of techniques and equipment for evidence collection and documentation.
  • Commitment to maintaining the security and integrity of evidence throughout the investigative process.
**Application Requirements:**

Submission of proof of training, certifications, and education beyond high school is mandatory.  Failure to provide the required documents will result in application disqualification.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
  • Positions in this class typically require fingering, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking, repetitive motions, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, climbing and balancing, pushing, pulling, and lifting, moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and intense noises.
